a guide to spiritual discernment

Not every word spoken over you life comes from God.
Some words come from other people's experiences projected onto you, or even worse from demonic deception.
But here is the truth:
God still speaks, and He wants you to know His voice clearly.
So, if you've ever questioned the source of a prophetic word, keep reading because this post is for you.
what is prophecy
Before we talk about discerning a prophetic word, we first need to understand what prophecy even is.
Prophecy is not fortune telling or emotional hype.
It is divine communication of God's heart and intentions for you, spoken through a human vessel.
" The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." ~ Revelation 19:10
This means that a true prophetic word should always:
Testify to the gospel of Jesus Christ
Align with scripture
Draw you closer to Christ
Glorify God
channels of prophetic revelation
God can release a prophetic word in many ways:
Dreams ( Matthew 1:20, Genesis 41:32)
Visions ( Acts 10:9-11)
Through another person ( 1 Kings 19:12)
Word of Knowledge ( John 4:16-18)
The Word of God - Highlighting a specific verse or releasing a rhema word.
Repetition - Hearing the same message repeatedly in a variety of ways.
But just because a word comes to you does not automatically mean that it was from God. That's why discernment is crucial because deception is running rampant.
my dream from god (genesis 41:32)
I once received a dream so unusual, and so vivid that I couldn't ignore it.
The dream repeated itself twice, and captured my attention. This extraordinary encounter led me to searching for answers and I came across Genesis 41:32.
"The dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice becauses the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass." ~ Genesis 41:32
This verse opened the door to an unforgettable journey with God, and confirmed what I was sensing in my spirit.
This dream wasn't just a pizza dream. It was a foretelling revelation that was established by God.
But here is the thing: I didn't automatically jump to conclusions. I surrendered it back to God and allowed Him to shed light upon it.
give the word back to god
When you receive a word, (especially one that speaks to the desires of your heart), surrender it immediately.
How To Steward A Prophetic Word:
Do not cling to it in fear or obsession
Do not disregard the word because it seems "too good to be true"
Do not go around asking others for their opinion or seek validation.
Do ask God to confirm it
Don't be so consumed by the destination that you miss the present moves of God along the journey.
This ensure that your heart remains pure, your hands remain open, and you spirit is postured to listen.
spiritual warfare + confusion
Now with any move of God, comes the reality of spiritual warfare.
The enemy is a master manipulator.
His famous strategy since the beginning of mankind has always been deception.
His favorite line?
"Did God really say you shouldn't eat from any tree in the garden?"
This tactic opens up the door to confusion, doubt, worry, overthinking, and even questioning God.
But here is what the Holy Spirit has taught me:
Confusion doesn't automatically mean it's not from God. It just means there is more than one voice at work.
Think about it:
God may have spoken a true word...
But then the enemy starts whispering lies...
Now you're confused, not because the word is false, but because the noise surrounding it is so loud.
"For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace" ~ 1 Corinthians 14:33
So if confusion is present that means there is a battle initiated against your peace.
And it can manifest in a variety of ways:
Anxiety
Depression
Confusion
Fear
Worry
Avoidance
Isolation
how to discern if a word is from god
Here is your prophetic word checklist 101:
Does it align with scripture?
God will never contradict His written Word.
Does it point to Jesus or just yourself?
A true prophetic word always reveals the desires and glory of Christ.
Can you shake it off or does it seem to chase you down?
When a word is from God it will never leave you alone. It will come up in prayer, sermons, and God will keep confirming it.
Have you took it to God in prayer?
Prophetic words are seeds. Prayer is the water that either makes it grow or reveals it to be false.
Are you giving God room to speak?
Spending too much time consuming content, and other voices is dangerous. This can distort your hearing, perspective, and hinder you from receiving what God wants to say.
what are you planting?
Remember, a word from God isn't just revelation, it's an invitation.
"For the Lord God does nothing without first revealing His secret to His servants the prophets." ~ Amos 3:7
When God wants to do something in the earth, He reveals it first.
He does not leave His children in the dark.
Prophetic words often come before divine moves of God.
Whether through dreams, words of knowledge, Scripture, or through a human vessel, God always speaks with intention.
"So is my word that comes from my mouth will not return to me empty. Instead, it does what I want, and accomplishes what I intend." ~ Isaiah 55:11
final encouragement
If you're battling confusion right now, you are not alone.
God wants you to know His voice.
He wants you to walk in truth.
He wants to be free from deception.
So hold onto these truths:
If it's truly God, you won't be able to shake it.
It will draw you deeper into relationship with Him.
And it will bring glory to His name.
